Cigarette smoke contains about 4,000 different chemicals which can damage the cells and systems of the human body. These include at least 80 chemicals that can cause cancer (including tar, arsenic, benzene, cadmium and formaldehyde) nicotine (a highly addictive chemical which hooks a smoker into their habit) and hundreds of other poisons such as cyanide, carbon monoxide and ammonia.
Every time a smoker inhales, these chemicals are drawn into the body where they interfere with cell function and cause problems ranging from cell death to genetic changes which lead to cancer.
This is why tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of approximately 25 diseases. According to WHO figures, smoking is responsible for approximately five million deaths worldwide every year. However it also contributes to, or aggravates many other diseases and may play a part in many more deaths. Even the WHO says that its impact on world health isn’t fully assessed.
WHO says smoking is a greater cause of death and disability than any single disease. By 2020, the WHO expects the worldwide death toll to reach 10 million, causing 17.7 per cent of all deaths in developed countries.
There are believed to be 1.1 billion smokers in the world, 800 million of them in developing countries.

In a world where signs mask reality, it is easy for one to fall into the jaws of tends, peer pressure, etc. This is because people are so easily attracted towards things that are given importance.
Advertising is one the main things that tends to cause this situation. This is because of the fact that it has promotional strategies attached to it that make it successful. In addition to this it is the imaging involved in the process that enhances the process. The images created for smoking for instance are brilliantly created and associated with manliness and bravery. The imaging seen in magazines tends to have similar impact on creating a social status.
It has been studied and observed that the manner in which people are pulled into habits like smoking has a lot to do with what they see; the images before them develop their psychology, and this is what makes one conscious or falsely conscious of themselves and the things they do. Smoking (believed to be a social status symbol) is one of the habits formed today that is directly caused by external forces. It must be also noted that much of the habits that people get into are because of external influences rather than their own free will.
People Adopt Smoking Habits At A Young Age Which Becomes A Permanent One
Apparently, habits such as smoking begin with the urge to create a status for one’s self. People, especially when they are young want to grow up and be mature quickly. Through advertising, smoking is observed to be a manly and mature act. Therefore, younger people admire of envy elders with cigarettes in their hands. They want to be just like them, and fail to see what it really takes to be a grown up.
When people are younger, also want to impress others through their actions. This is why they want to dress up well or develop an outlook that is eye-catching or one that will seem to be in sync with adulthood. Smoking in contemporary times is one of these actions through which youngsters try and prove themselves. The social status that one tries to develop of course turns out to be something quite different with the passage of time.
The social status so developed results in one often becoming addicted. This addiction is such that one cannot get a day started without a cigarette, and cannot work properly without nicotine flowing the blood stream.
People have ruined their lives because of this addiction that had started with trying to gain a social status. This is perhaps a price to pay, and indeed a severe one because if one cannot give up the need for social status or addiction, there are severe repercussions that could result. Diseases such as cancer and other lung disorders could result. Indeed, 87% lung cancers are caused by smoking. This is a very high percentage for lung cancer as a cause. However, there are few that really pay attention to the warning signs. They are many signs before one reaches this stage in most cases, and so one must take heed and reduce their ego when in need of social status.
Clearly then, it can be observed that smoking is actually a habit that develops through the need for social status, but may quickly turn into addiction. This does not end here, as one could even end up in a severer condition with lung cancer of any other lung disorder.

Individual interviews were conducted with 726 Glasgow children aged 6–17 years. The majority of the secondary school children made good judgements of the cigarette brands preferred by teenage and adult smokers. The young smokers were particularly good at this. These findings add to the growing body of evidence indicating that young people are much more aware of matters relating to cigarettes (such as brand names and imagery) than adults realize, and that underage smokers are more aware of these matters than nonsmokers of the same age.
Primary school children with parents who smoked tended to be more aware of brand preferences than primary school children whose parents did not smoke. This indicates that the children of smokers tend to be more attuned to brand preferences, and that much of this early learning occurs in the home.
The young smokers showed an enhanced preference for the brand most preferred by adults. This replicates a phenomenon reported in Australia. The preferred brand in Glasgow, Kensitas Club, is heavily advertised in the Glasgow press.
The findings suggest that children are highly sensitive to the advertising of cigarette brands, and provide further support for recent research indicating that cigarette advertising promotes and reinforces smoking among the young.

New York City smokers have been sent out of time, coughed with disdain, and now they are burdened by taxes on cigarettes more expensive in the nation. Now add the cost of damage, the state is declaring its highest-in-the-nation cigarette tax a success. Their number is a state-smoking Quitline quadrupled to nearly 10,000 calls, week 2 June, when the tax of $ 2.75 pack kicks, New York City health commissioner, Dr. Richard Dainese said. Less than 2,300 people called for help during the same week of 2007.
"Not everyone that tries, quits," Daines said. "We estimate about 140,000 New Yorkers quit smoking successfully. We have more than a million try to cut down or stop, but it's how you get people to try: give them multiple chances and multiple reasons to stop."
The increase took effect on June 3 sent the tax from $ 1.25 to $ 2.75 per pack. In most of the state, cigarettes range between $ 6 and $ 8 per package, depending on the brand and the store prices. Can cost up to $ 10 in New York, which has its own tax. Smokers calling the Quitline requested some 7,900 kits the week the new tax was introduced in 1722 compared to same period requested in the last year.
